This project has multiple goals. Firstly, the project will expose Lego building to those students who have never had a chance to 'play' with them. The school I work in has a high number of low socioeconomic families, so Legos have not been a part of everyone's childhood. The completed Saturn V Lego rocket will also be used as a model to demonstrate how complex the Apollo moon landing missions were. It is one thing to read about it, but quite another to have students participate in the demonstration of the way the command, service, and lunar modules took astronauts to the moon and back in a sophisticated dance of machinery. I believe the Lego Saturn V will help history come alive. These were momentous events in science, technology, engineering, and history. The relevancy to Astronomy is obvious. America's achievements are demonstrated well in the actual events and this Lego model will be helpful in conveying that. I believe the project will help increase interest in the past, present, and future in Astronomy and its related sub-sciences.
