This project highlights the voice of author Meredith Russo and her award-winning novel, If I Was Your Girl. This text will showcase solid narrative writing, support an award-winning trans author, and provide exceptional LGBTQ+ reading material to discuss and analyze within our GSA Book Club group. Additionally, students will compare this text with what they know and see of trans people in the media. If I Was Your Girl will engage our GSA with essential questions around what it means to live as a teenager, in rural America, who is trans. How does the protagonist seem similar and/or different to what they imagined before reading? How does the authorial note to cis and trans readers have us all rethink the act of reading and intended audience?
