I teach fourth grade students at Sterling Elementary. The students are mostly on free or reduced lunch. We serve a culturally diverse population of students. Due to their diverse backgrounds, they struggle in all subject areas. With the introduction of common core curriculum, we are trying to include real world application to our fourth grade students. The fourth grade team wants to give our students access to a variety of text. Many of our students do not have materials at home that relate to real world events.Time for Kids and Scholastic Magazine focus on issues in the real world from a students point of view. This will give them the opportunity to learn about people and communities around the world, discuss issues, and express their views on how events affect their lives.
