Students will engage in hands-on energy and design projects that teach circuit making, energy and motion, solar energy, and water filtration. K'Nex Forces Kit teaches key concepts such as: The Mathematics of Motion, Abilities of Technological Design, Design Challenges and Applied Simple Machine Technology. After initial understanding of salt water cells, solar power and water filtration students will use Little Bits (a circuit making system) and reflect on the lessons provided from these science kits to find innovative solutions to clean the ocean water in our Island home. The end result will be each group producing a 3d model and presenting their concept to the class. Designers need a proper workspace for projects and group work to be manageable, fun and interactive! A table to accommodate small group collaboration, bean bag chairs to offer comfortable seating while fidgety students document projects in their science journals, a whiteboard for students to outline the design process and share in visual collaboration. Studies have shown allowing students to move while working gives their motor cortex something to focus on, resulting in greater success in learning. The small group table and alternative seating will engage the many learning styles present in the classroom. Science journals and a whiteboard are tools that help to solidify and deepen the learning process. These projects will enhance students' critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration skills. Ultimately, students are encouraged to approach the design process with intent in creating a sustainable innovations that promote environmental stewardship. Thank you, Tom's of Maine!
