Receiving a subscription to these magazines would broaden the reading experiences of my students in a variety of ways. Students need variety in their reading lives! These magazines offer a wide range of genres to read; stories, dramas, poems, letters, research articles, opinions, essays and more! Students will learn to use all parts of a text as they read these including captions, graphs and sidebars, as required by Common Core. Additionally, these would provide authentic informational texts at an appropriate reading level which would simulantaneously expose students to current events, helping them to gain background knowledge within numerous topics. Even the top performing student cannot ultimately be successful without a good deal of real world knowledge. The foundation for children's future interests and aspirations is layed at this early age and these magazines could potentially play a role in shaping futures.
