Middle school students are experiencing anxiety every day. Statistics support this but I don't need the data as I see it daily. My 6th through 8th-grade advisory students start each day at 7:30. Their faces reflect a spectrum of expression - smiles, furrowed brows, sleepiness, vacant stares - due to a variety of experiences - home, school, friends, identity, the list can go on. One morning activity, "What I wish my teacher knew..." was eye-opening and worrisome. Most of my 28 students expressed a concern in their lives summed up with the word anxiety. I want to create an environment where my students can start their day in CALM. Dim lights, flexible seating, mindful activities, and moments of quiet. Before we begin daily advisory activities, we will take a mindful moment of calm to give their brains a moment of peace and to explore how to bring calm into their daily lives. Each morning, at 7:35 am, we will be taking a mindful moment. We will start with 1 minute of quiet and reflection. Students will find a place in the classroom where they can inwardly focus, be still and participate in the moment. The goal is to increase the time to 5 minutes a day as they become for comfortable with the process. We will use the Calm Classroom app as they approach longer periods of time.
