Performing helps students gain confidence and feel great about themselves. Too often students with severe and profound disabilities are not given the opportunity to benefit from performance opportunities. Research has also shown that theater is also an excellent way to integrate speech therapy into functional activities. My students will help write a curriculum based musical that they will perform for their peers, school staff, and parents. In order to be successful, and for the students to gain the confidence this success builds, the students need body microphones, shot gun mics (which pick up a wide range of sound), and our school needs a new mixing board. This way, even the students who do not or can not speak loudly, will still have the opportunity to be heard! This will not only benefit them, but also the audience who comes to see their show!
