The goal here is have a Flexible Seating Classroom. This means that instead of just having desks and hard chairs you have wobble seats, exercise balls, stools, camping chairs and stools. These chairs surround not only desks, but tables both high and low. The students will have the freedom to sit where they choose, and in a place that is the best learning space for them. Many teachers have said that they have seen a huge improvement on student focus with those who have ADD and ADHD. They are able to move and concentrate at the same time. Teachers have found that students without a learning disability have benefited from this arrangement as well. They are less likely to zone out while sitting high up on a bar-stool, on a ball or a wobble chair. It keeps their body active while their brain is active. Students can even choose to stand and learn if that is what works best for them. I currently have students who choose to stand, and their focus is amazing along with their retention. Not only that, but the students can do more with STEM in the classroom by having the tables. Set up and take down will be easy, and so will table discussions and elaboration because of the table style seating. Having tables will even provide more space than having desks. In a classroom setting, space is very valued. This will benefit my current students for the remaining year, my students next year, and the year after that. My goal as a teacher is to have my students feel safe and comfortable in the classroom. We have achieved most of those goals together this year, and this would just make it even better.
