In the past, my young students have enjoyed playing house using a toy kitchen and a variety of foods in all sizes and colors. This has improved sentence length, use of adjectives, knowledge of basic concepts, and social interaction. Students also enjoy playing store with the food items and will use the language that they see adults using during this routine experience. The right toys can help small children engage in pretend play and pretend play fosters communication in a natural environment that kids enjoy! Kids enjoy re-enacting camping trips, trips to the zoo, an adventure at the airport, and of course, playing house. These experiences are rich with language and increase the amount of language that children produce during a speech therapy session. Plus, students enjoy working on their communication because to them it looks like playtime!
