One year ago I was able to purchase seven wobble stools for my classroom. Before this, my classroom had rows of uniform, plastic chairs and desks. It felt dull, boring and unexciting. What a dramatic difference my new wobble stools made! My students want to use them all the time. They are more eager to come to class. They are more stimulated when working. These stools make it so my students are sitting straight. Better posture leads to increased attention. These stools make it so my students don’t have to sit still! They can rock or sway or fidget to their heart’s content without compromising safety or disrupting others. We had to develop a system for who uses the chairs when since there aren’t enough for everyone. It isn’t easy. There are days where students don’t get the opportunity to use the wobble chairs. My students sit for most of the day and have limited opportunity to move. They have gym twice a week for 60 minutes and have recess twenty minutes a day. I try to give my students a movement break during school, but with eight hours a day and with much of the time sitting, a short movement break is not enough. My dream is that I can provide the opportunity for each of my students to use flexible seating all the time. My students need to be in a classroom that inspires them. I want my classroom to be a beautiful space which makes them feel good both physically and emotionally. I would love for there to be options for each of my students to choose from all of the time, not just part of day or on certain days. Please support me in bringing more active seating options for all of my students!!
