Engagement is key when getting students to learn, especially in my classroom. This year, I have found that our community of learners loves art. If I add any aspect of visual arts to a learning activity they are on the edge of their seats and soak up everything they can. Academics are important for my students, especially the demographics in my classroom but in order to make them love learning I have to keep their interest, and who doesn't love art? They especially love creating something that they are proud of. We talk about how art is subjective and everyone can do it, it will turn out amazing, and they all feel successful. I am requesting watercolor sets for each individual student, and any who move in, including extras for those that get destroyed), paintbrushes and special paper so that my students can use their own creativity to create watercolor pictures when they are doing visual arts.
