Being in an alternative high school, students are asked to sit for eighty minutes due to clock scheduling. As most of us know, it is difficult to sit still for that long and being able to stay focused enough to learn a new content. These cycles will allow students the ability to be active while working in Math. Research ties physical activity and increased brain activity in many studies demonstrating the need for a physical outlet for students learning math. Students were shown this research on the first day of class and asked to write a proposal including what they wanted this room to look like to make it inviting when they were learning math, and a majority asked for under desk cycles. We have managed to put everything else they asked for in place. With these cycles, students will not only have a better chance at learning the material, they will also be getting physical activity in the process.
