I teach at a community based middle school in Baltimore. My classroom is racially and ethnically diverse; about half of my students are African American and many others are English Language Learners and/or recent immigrants to the United States. Almost all of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. Last year was my first year teaching and my students amazed me with their curiosity and their passion for education. Despite their young age, they think for themselves, challenge authority, and demand excellence from their teachers and administrators. Their spirited attitude keeps me impassioned in the classroom. I am so impressed with my students because despite their talents and promise, they have been facing incredible systemic obstacles. Our school district is recovering from a massive budget shortage and our classrooms lack basic resources. My students deserve the chance to let their passion for education blossom.
