As part of our curriculum students have drama class once a week. Currently several grade levels are focusing on designing appropriate costumes for plays they devise as a group. Once they have drawn 'renderings' of their ideas they are able to go into the costume closet to put together items that best match their designs. Currently we are using donated items of clothing but it would be wonderful for students to have real costumes to pick from. Costumes help students embody the characters they have created in drama class. The grade levels that are not currently focusing specifically on costume design are spending time devising new stories for performance and once they have written their scripts they are allowed to pull costumes from the costume area when they perform. These costumes will allow the students to envision a more professional expression of their work and better embody the characters they have imagined.
