Much is expected of students who will enter the work world in a few years. Skills such as complex problem solving, creativity, justifying an opinion, collaborating with others, and critical thinking are valued. Mathematics is one of the academic subjects that seem most challenging to many students and yet is so important not just in future grades but in their lives. Collaborative math games provide a fun, low stress method for students to build on and continue to work on their skills. Game play offers opportunities for student conversations and discussions as they work together in a competitive match with another team. It may just seem like playing games but they are actually working on mathematics. The math games in this proposal will not just remain in my classroom but will be shared with other 4th and 5th grade classrooms. This way, we as a school, all move forward towards learning mathematics and improving our skills.
