My students attend a high poverty school and many families do not have the resources at home to support modified learning programs. These supplies will create an engaging and comfortable learning environment for my middle school students. By using these materials my students with severe handicaps will gain the academic, social, and life skills they need to succeed now and in the future. Math manipulatives such as magnetic numbers and an assortment of other counters will bring them closer to grade level by building the foundational math skills they need to meet their individual education goals . It is important to have a variety of objects like unifix cubes, snap beads, sensational counting and sorting set because we practice the same skills daily in hands-on rotational math labs. For language arts, our class rotates through stations where we work on different skills. Bean bag chairs provide a comfortable space to explore books in our reading corner. Students will practice spelling their names and sight words with magnetic letters. Lined paper will help my students form letters, then words, then sentences as they develop. Learning games like Pop and Add to 30, Time Bingo, Pop and Match Positional Words, and What's Happening Photo Cards provide a fun way to practice language and math skills. These items will be used daily. An assortment of different size balls will give our class the opportunity to develop the gross motor skills they need to become functional adults. We will use the balls during adapted PE time and for other outside activities. White boards, erasers and markers give our class a waste-free way to practice spelling, math, and art.
