Immigrant and city kids have limited exposure to many of the net sports like badminton, floor hockey and tennis. Playing these sports during glass truly bridges any language barriers that exist between our diverse students because none of them have a background experience playing. Unfortunately, the equipment is cumbersome and expense so our current equipment room contains next to nothing to make net sports a true experience for our kids. Funding this project will boost the self-confidence, foster genuine teamwork and heighten fitness levels of our immigrant students. Using the 2 portable nets that were requested, we could have 2 courts of tennis height games going on. We could introduce our students to the basics of serving a tennis ball and volleying. Different games such as singles and double could be played and mini- tournaments could be set up. We could then use those same nets and raise the height a bit to go over the fundamentals of badminton. This is a great game for all students because the risk of injury is low but the potential for building team work and agility is high. The floor hockey nets and sticks would be used to introduce the students to safety and skills associated the sport. Lastly, the equipment cage will provide a safe and secure way to keep the equipment right where it should be!
