All of my students are English language learners. The majority, 60% speak Spanish. About 25% are Russian speakers. The rest of my students are from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Our urban public school is one with over 54% of the students qualifying for the free and reduced price lunch program. In other words, we are a school with high poverty and high need. There are so many things my students don't have access to. Most of their families are in 'survival' mode, just trying to have basic needs met. Providing my students with a hands-on opportunity to use the latest technology increases student engagement, boosts self-esteem and increases confidence. You are not going to succeed at developing your English language at school without being engaged, without self-esteem and without confidence.
