My students need multiple copies of Winn-Dixie chapter books to practice reading fluently, at a more challenging level, and to learn more about friendship. My students love being read to just as I did when I was their age. Instead of the teacher reading from one chapter book, my students like to follow along with their own copy of the book. This helps improve their vocabulary, and fluency, and will help them advance to higher levels at year end. There are two classes of 27 third graders in my class this year. My classes are full due to lack of teachers in our district. Most of them are reading below third-grade level. Some are reading on a first-grade level. My school is located in a town without a book store and many parents stay to far to access internet. Students will use the Because of Winn-Dixie books to delve into further understanding of the text. This will include work with fluency, main idea, character traits, comprehension, sequencing, and vocabulary and word work. Teachers will use the Because of Winn-Dixie books to teach Close Reading of a text, theme of a text, vocabulary and context clues, and to also model reading with fluency for and with students. I will use the Because of Winn-Dixie books with my students, and I will also share them with my third-grade team so that all third graders at my school can benefit from this great, fluency, reading resource. Since all of my students are reading below third-grade reading level, they need more exposure with reading. Thank you!
