Students with autism spectrum disorder and other impairments often have a difficulty regulating their emotions. My preschool special education classroom is in need of some areas that they can go to take a break at. Many students with autism spectrum disorder are bombarded by sensory input from the classroom. Students often feel overwhelmed, and need a private space to take a break from all the noise and action of the classroom. Having a designated space to take a break with help students learn to regulate their emotions, as well as it will allow me to continue my lesson with my other students. After careful thought and consideration, I have decided that my students need at least two separate areas in my classroom to take a break. Often times there is more than one person that needs a break. I am asking for 2 wooden, cubes that my students can sit in. The cubes have a big hole on 3 of the faces where students can enter and exit, and can be seen at all times. A large pillow will be on the floor of the cube. A cube is a perfect space that is safe for my students to take a break in. I also need a divider in my room to reduce visual stimulation. My students often get an idea stuck in their head, and have difficulty transitioning from one activity to another. A divider will help keep students focused and on task, and will reduce visual stimulation that can be distracting or overwhelming. My goal is to teach students to learn to notice the signs that they need a break before they are past the point of frustration or over stimulation. Students who are aware of their individual needs will learn a life-long skill of self regulation.
