Our world and students are ever-changing. When I make my lesson plans and work on school work, I sit on my couch at home or sit outside on my deck chair. Why should my students have to sit in old-fashioned desks and uncomfortable chairs when that is not the best learning environment for them? My 5th Graders need a safe, open, comfortable, and creative learning environment to keep them focused and excited to learn! I believe that if they get to pick the best seating choice for them, they will be more focused and more excited about what they are working on. My classroom is student-centered. I do a short whole-group lesson, then we break out into math stations. I work with a small group doing a mini-lesson while the rest of the students work through flexible stations. They play games, work on task cards, and all kinds of other collaborative activities. This flexible and alternative seating will give them voice and choice and help them focus and do their best while working with their peers.
