My students fascinate me. I have had a Tagalog-speaking student who moved from the Philippines to my classroom in a matter of days and communicated best through artwork. I have seen a very sweet Honduran girl, with the most beautiful handwriting and big brown eyes, blossom from being extremely shy with English to carrying on wonderful conversations about literature. Several students are "boys and girls next door," who love music, sports, and spending time with friends and family. My district serves a student population that is about 65-70% free and reduced-price lunch, yet we outscore neighboring districts with regard to test scores. Despite that fact, our teachers know our kids are more than just a number garnered once a year on an exam. Our kids are creative, digitally-inclined, active, and curious. Going to work every day for me is an absolute joy because my school is full of happy, dedicated teachers who serve loving and respectful young people.
