I am requesting a class set of children's beginner ukuleles to give my students a meaningful classroom experience. I am currently teaching at a low performing title 1 school on the west coast of Oahu, Hawaii. We are a low performing school so all of our funds focus on Math and Language Arts content. My students rarely get opportunities to explore music. Being that we are located in Hawaii, music is a big part of the local culture here and I want my students to be able to learn and participate in it. Sometimes a student who struggles academically can shine in another area such as music. If I incorporate more music into the classroom it provides an opportunity for students to express themselves and might make school more exciting for those who are struggling academically. I personally had a very well rounded elementary experience as a child and it makes me sad to see that the arts are taken out of schools. I want to bring Arts back to my classroom starting with music.
