My school is a small, rural Oklahoma high school with about 350 students. Our students come from many cultural (Native American, Hispanic, African-American, and European) and socioeconomic backgrounds (a high percentage qualifying for free-reduced lunches and public food assistance). It is often difficult for some students to purchase the materials required for learning opportunities leading to many teachers purchasing general supplies out-of-pocket. This project, and others like it, puts a financial hardship on not only the students, but on the instructors as well. Although faced with much hardship, most of our students are funny, motivated, and have stories to tell. I want to give them the opportunity to tell their stories in a creative, fun way that will build not only memories but also self worth and a sense of accomplishment.
