Our classroom is an exciting, busy place each and every day. We are responsible for 18 at-risk four year-olds in our PreK class. Families must be income eligible for our full-day program and have at least two risk factors to qualify. Many of our families are single, working parents or financially unstable and reside with other family members in the area. Some of our children wear the same uniforms to school each day. Most families do not have home computers or an internet and/or wi-fi connection in their homes. The neighborhood surrounding the school has many abandoned homes mixed with newer HUD homes built within the last five years. I have been an early childhood educator for twenty-five years and am very passionate about my career with Detroit Public Schools. Our school is a safe haven for our students and families. My goal is to prepare our students for kindergarten and expose them to many experiences.
