The children at school come from an impoverished neighborhood. Many of them have only heard the music on the radio, rap and pop. The teachers at our school are a dedicated staff devoted to raising the expectations of a community that has been underdeveloped and in some ways neglected. Education is the key to upward mobility. We don't make excuses for our children, we look for solutions. I am dedicated to building a good music program by exposing my students to interesting musical ideas from around the world. I am committed to finding innovative ideas to teach my students the fundamentals of music. What better way to do that than through the rhythms and melodies of world music? Presently our school has eighteen glockenspiels and a drum set converted to make percussion instruments. If I wish to raise the expectations of my students, I must also try to raise the quality and variety of their instruments.
