There was one thing my classroom needed and that was a community rug. A place where my students would be able to comfortably gather to learn new objectives and share scientific discoveries. Every year, every teacher spends a great deal of their own money in their classroom and I am no exception. My splurge for the the 2017-2018 school year was going to be a quality classroom rug as I have been using 2 smaller inexpensive rugs. I am a teacher in an area that was directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey and my classroom took longer to come together than planned. On the first day of our delayed start, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer. Talk about sending your life upside down. Needless to say, money I had intended to use to purchase a classroom rug became money I will need to pay my doctor bills. I work in a title 1 school and always have throughout my career. I do everything I can to make sure that my classroom is comfortable and engaging because my students often do not go home to comfortable houses. My students deserve a quality classroom rug and I do not want my medical expenses to get in the way of their learning needs. I am also requesting a glider and ottoman which I am sure seems very strange. My colorectal cancer treatment plan has started with chemotherapy and I am being as proactive as I can to be in the classroom. Nephropathy has made it hard to get around the classroom. A soft place to sit and work with my students will be important in my ability to stay in the classroom as long as possible.
