I teach sixth grade reading in an urban school district. While our school has met AYP, we serve a diverse student population. Specifically, my classroom serves several key groups. Homeless students and ESL students remain critical students to encourage success in the classroom due to changes in home, family, and cultural life. Finally, my classroom services the majority of the special education students in the sixth grade. All my students across the student populations need to be more highly engaged in reading, writing and connecting language arts across the curriculum. Many have had little success in previous years in reading/language arts classes.
