These are new graphic novels that reach students who sometimes loose interest to read in middle school.\r\n In our classroom, students start class with 12 minutes of silent reading. Students often get a choice of 2-4 books that match our unit theme to choose from to read during this time. When students finish that book before the quarter ends, they can pick a book to read. Students are always more excited to read when it is a book they get to choose from. These new books are books students are excited to read. \r\n I also have students who just love to read or whose parents insist on time at home to read. This is something I have dreamed about since I started teaching at this school three years ago.\r\nWhen I started as the 6th grade reading teacher here, I inhereted a classroom library that was packed with dust-covered books of every level and spanning many decades. After clearing and cleaning out the shelves so that we had books in good shape and aimed for middle school students, I realized that we had less than 30 books by authors of color and/or characters of color. And, there were no books that were written in the last 15 years on the shelf.\r\nYour help has made it so that we not only have many newly written books, but we have more than doubled the amount of books with characters of color and by authors of color. My school is 88% students of color. It is important and necessary for them to see themselves in what they are reading. It is important to see that those texts are not only the texts in our textbooks. \r\nStudents use these books for our Independent Reading at the start of our reading class. Students get to choose their book and then spend 12 minutes reading and responding to that text. Students have already shown excitement and interest in our new books. Students we would browse the classroom library and pick something because they had to are now pulling the new books off to really look at them.\r\nThank you for making this dream come true so that all students can feel welcome and represented in our reading classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1731962909885,"projectUrl":"project/expand-our-classroom-library/8668079/","projectTitle":"Expand Our Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Pieschek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9420440_orig.jpg?crop=1848,1848,x0,y61&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1719502239768","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9420440"},{"teacherId":5995192,"projectId":8724196,"letterContent":"My students and I have definitely enjoyed using our resources. They have really made a difference in the efficiency of how my students can put information into their journals and put together their weekly warm-ups. Several students made verbal comments such as \"Wow we got all of that from someone that did not even know us.\", and \"That is really nice of them to think about us and help us out.\" Another student said, \"Can I ask for something from Donor's Choose?\" You could feel the excitement in all of my classes. \r\n\r\n We do have several more diagrams to complete in order to finsish our Unit on Expressions and Equations.
