My students need a new treadmill. The one we have in the gym is on its last legs. It works intermittently and is over 10 years old. It has taken much abuse over the years, helping keep my students fit but it is way overdue for a replacement. My students with autism desperately need a treadmill to help relieve their anxiety. For many of my students it is an important part of their behavioral intervention program and is not only used to relieve anxiety but proactively avert it by using it as positive reinforcement or as part of their schedule. It allows them to calm down and prevent sometimes violent behavior. It allows them to go back to education. I am a physical education teacher at a school for special needs students. We have students with autism, cognitive delays, down syndrome and all types of physical disabilities. The emphasis of my adaptive physical education program emphasizes fitness and most of my students will benefit greatly from a new treadmill.
