We are located in an urban area with 98% Free and reduced lunches. Our school is focused on improving educational skills and working with the community to develop responsible citizens. Many of my students are struggling with their schooling. There are a variety of reasons, ranging from complicated family situations and personal issues to simply poverty and all its implications. Finding something that the student enjoys, and helping them to succeed in that area can be a crucial turning point. Once a struggling student has found success, they gain confidence and are willing to persevere in areas where they were previously behind. The art room is a type of refuge for my students, there they are free to express themselves. Exposing them to a variety of ways to make art is key to finding an area of the arts that speaks to them. It is my hope that the arts will become, for them, a sanctuary of beauty in an often ugly and disordered world.
