My school is wonderfully diverse. However, part of the challenge for our community is families finding continued employment. As a result, many of our children and their families move often to areas that will provide job opportunity. When that is the number one concern for families, food and basic clothing take priority over school supplies. Providing additional school supplies so children can have what they need to do projects produces a more confident and responsible student. Children don't have to worry that they didn't turn an assignment in because they had nothing at home to create a diorama or poster for their science project. Building a student's self confidence is an important part of an educator's job...that effort is doubled with ESOL students as they have an additional struggle with acquiring the language and fluency. Give them the tools to keep up and excel with their peers.
