My students are from a wide range of backgrounds. We have a very large mobile population, with students coming and going because they can not afford rent, and struggle to provide basic essentials . My school gives these students a place to feel safe and warm, which in many cases is the only place they get that opportunity. In my music room, students are encouraged to take risks and accept the differences we all bring to the table. As a class, we not only learn music, but create new music and expressive movement performances. I encourage students to express themselves in a safe environment away from judgment and learn that they can succeed when they grow up. When the students come to my music class, I have them up and moving most of the time. They enjoy the fast pace of the class, and the opportunity to hear not just music someone else made, but music they create with their classmates.
