My students come from all over the world. They are English language learners in the Bronx. My school is a great school that just happens to be in a high poverty area. But oh! If you could see them! They are so lovely, so full of joy and love of learning. This could be even greater, though. Last year, out of pocket, I purchased 5 portable cassette players to try the "Portable Bedtime Story" project. It was wildly successful. Teachers who do not use cassette players in their classrooms started bringing me all of their old books on tape (some of them barely used!) and the students I have who had a learning disability (dyslexia for example) coupled with learning English got a chance to check out many titles over the course of the year. The children who took part in that program all increased in reading ability and I believe that the "Portable Bedtime Story" project was part of that success. Next year, I want all of my students to be able to take part.
