The use of hands-on activities in math and reading is crucial in first grade. These games help concepts come alive by asking students to touch, see, and talk about the ideas they are working on. Each activity comes in a variety of levels so that students can work at a pace that is just right for them and support each other with new concepts. This also allows students to learn to work both independently and with partners. By donating to this project, you will be helping my students learn foundational skills in math and reading as well as contributing to their academic engagement. The math activities cover basic addition, subtraction and place value. The literacy centers teach reading skills such as decoding and recognizing sight words. Without a firm grasp on all of these ideas, my students will struggle in later grades. However, more important than anything else, these games will prove that learning is exciting and fun. It will motivate my students to learn letter sounds and addition facts so they can play the games and work with their friends. If nothing else, I want my students to come away from my classroom with a firm belief that school is engaging and learning is enjoyable.
