Most of my students come in with no previous experience in a classroom. They have no phonological awareness, no basic concepts of print. I strive to help them all become fluent readers before leaving Kindergarten and starting First Grade. Too often many students move on from grade to grade with a gap in reading. Students who are not reading at grade level will only fall behind as years go by. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 64% of 4th grade students read below proficient levels and sadly most students who are behind do not usually catch up. The gap only gets bigger and while students are able to complete school their love for reading decreases they are unable to comprehend what they are reading and most students give up on and use tactics to get out of reading because they are embarrassed to ask for help for fear about how others will percieve them. I plan on using these leveled readers to start a morning read in my classroom. I will invite parents and my students peers (older students) to join me in the mornings to listen to the students read and encourage reading. Students love to be heard and love reading to others. Not only will morning read encourage students to read, but it will be motivation to practice and get better and it will also help students fluency and reading comprehension. Not only will I keep these books in class I plan on inviting students to take them home to keep reading at home with their families. I want to encourage the love for reading. I want to help decrease the reading gaps in our society. I want our students to be successful readers!
