Scholastic News is a weekly news magazine written for 1st graders on current and historical events. It engages students in these important events while providing them with explanations that can help them make sense of the world. Scholastic News Magazine will provide my students with a means of gaining new knowledge, expanding on what they know, and giving them a resource to both answers and to fuel their questions about the world. In our classroom, Scholastic News will be more than just a news magazine. It will be a nonfiction resource, a conversation starter, and a tool for collaborative learning. It will help me provide my students with the facts, but also serve as a means of launching them into further inquiry. Reading, comprehending, and evaluating nonfiction resources are essential skills in the modern world. Scholastic News Magazine will provide my students with opportunities to develop their critical thinking and reading skill while being immersed in the important events happening in their world.
