I teach middle school students with special needs. They have learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, communication disorders, hearing and visual impairments, and some even have mild intellectual disabilities. My students would rather be doing anything but writing and reading. They have struggled for so long to attain what their peers have, that by the time they get to me they have lost all interest in school. Although, my students come from homes that struggle financially, they are some of the first to show how much they care about others. They are used to doing without. Because of this, though, they haven't had access to a lot of literature in their homes. My goal is to get a book into their hands daily for two purposes: first, so they can read something at or below their reading level to increase fluency, and second, so that they can see what good writing looks like.
