These students are anxious; they sit on the edge of their seats and want to learn. Excitement ensues as they receive a novel and have high hopes for what they read. Anxiety leaves to a form of escapism, which is sometimes needed when given a novel. It becomes a relief in the classroom. They apply what they read to the future in this suburban, edge-of-rural area. Students do not experience much diversity; they have not experienced the world, but they have worldly ambitions as they read and put life into perspective. Literature enhances their ability to communicate and see the world from different angles.
