My school currently has around 800 students from 1st through 5th grade, 90% are Hispanic, 5% Caucasian and 5% Native American (Cocopah). I have a total of 25 enthusiastic third graders. Their demographics are 100% Hispanic, low social economic status, free lunch, English Language Learners in the broad spectrum of Intermediate to Proficient level based on the AZELLA assessment. 80% of my students are reading below grade level (1st-2nd grade) based on DIBELS assessment. Reading centers and small intervention groups are very helpful in helping them decode, have phonemic awareness and fluency. My students enjoy reading and with any little progress they accomplish, we make a big deal out of it. Using technology in the classroom has made them more involved in their own learning. Right now each group is sharing 1 tablet where we use various online apps or websites to improve their reading comprehension. The available tablet is shared with other teachers, too. We would love to have tablets of our own.
