My school is in a low-income area, 90% of my students are on free/reduced lunch and the majority of the population is Haitian-American. My students are keenly aware of the fact that education is only way to a better life. My AP Capstone class is a rigorous college level course worth 3 college credits. Most students would shy aware from such a tough course but my program has grown from 34 students last year to 90 this year. My students come to me with limited knowledge of world problem and my goal as a teacher is to broaden their thoughts, to make them question, and to evaluate an issue from multiple perspectives. Last year, the projects my students completed and the well-informed citizens they became was overwhelming for me. I have never been so proud of a group of students. My course unlocks the door to college, the academic writing I require is college level and prepares them for the rigor college demands.
