I work in a district where more than 135 languages or dialects are spoken. Our school is 68% free and reduced lunch as well as 48% English Language Learners. My students are excited about learning and reading but often struggles because of lack of exposure to language and vocabulary. Many of my students are emergent readers who are working on making the first letter around of a word. The next step is to look at the picture and use the picture clues to identify the unknown word. My students need a larger vocabulary and picture recognition to be able to do this more easily. Scholastic News would expose my students to nonfiction vocabulary and pictures. Students would be able to use these magazines in school and take them home to share with their families.
