Kindergarten is the first time many of my students are being exposed to school. They come to me at all different levels. Some are learning to leave their moms for the first time; some are learning to share; some are learning to speak English; and others are coming to me knowing the most basic skills and are ready to apply those skills to new situations. My students are empathetic, eager to learn, and happy. They are excited to come to school and learn alongside their friends. The majority of my students come from poverty stricken homes where they speak another language besides English. Eighty-seven percent of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunches and fifty-two percent are English Language Learners. Most parents are concerned about where their next meal or winter coat will come from, so books are pretty low on their list of priorities. I want my classroom to be an escape from outside stressors. A listening center will help reach this goal.
