Can you imagine traveling around the world without leaving the confines of your classroom? I have sampled cuisines from over 40 different countries all while sitting behind my desk. I have learned to say "hello, goodbye, and thank you" in 6 different languages. I only have 44 more to go. As you have probably ascertained from the brief narrative, my school burgeons with diversity. This diversity consists of 44 countries and 52 languages and dialects. In a school of around 1100 students, over 800 are English language learners. With such diversity, our classrooms are inundated with unique challenges and opportunities. In my homeroom class of 33, 9 students have learning disabilities. 80% of the students in my classroom are refugees and many come to us with no former education and with psychological experiences that interfere with their learning. As a 5th grade teacher, I am often some of the students' first teacher. Many come to 5th grade performing below 2nd grade math level.
