My students come from a multitude of diverse backgrounds. Many are first generation American or immigrated here as small children. They live in a low income community where crime and violence are prevalent. My students are struggling with the regular challenges of adolescence coupled with the struggles of every day survival in an often violent community. Even so most of my students maintain a positive attitude. They are very capable of academic success and need resources that are not only engaging but also reflective of their experiences. My school is dedicated to bringing high standards and educational equity to all students. We have access to some technology but are lacking funds for classroom supplies and new engaging literacy materials.
