My school is a K-8 school. Ninety-eight percent of our students receive free/reduced lunch and 20% of our population is special ed. I have eight 3rd-5th grade students. They are an extremely bright and charismatic group who truly enjoy learning. They also happen to have significant cognitive disabilities that affect how they learn. My students come to school excited to learn each day, but are often hungry, tired, cannot see the board or do not have supplies they need or clothes that fit. They cannot help the instability of their home life, so we have created a learning environment where everyone feels safe to take risks, try their hardest, have fun and make mistakes. Each student starts the day with a scholar trophy on their desk and can earn scholar dollars throughout the day. They know that being a scholar means coming to school every day, trying their hardest, raising their hand, participating in class and being kind and respectful to one another.
