My students live in one of the lowest income and high crime areas in Chicago. School for them is an opportunity to be something better, an escape from their every day hardships. I always tell them that in school they are safe; school is where they are able to be that eager child ready to absorb every ounce of knowledge. Most of my students come from home environments where unfortunately there is very minimal parental involvement. Through their love for school, they find the importance of responsibility and turn in homework, complete classroom assignments, and are very attentive in class. I always refer to my school as being a "diamond in the rough." The surrounding neighborhood to my school is very scary and there have been times we have experience drive by shootings, and other violent acts of crimes. But the feeling when you enter our classrooms are so different. The children are polite, respectful and eager to learn. They are my diamonds.
