My students are from the South Bronx area, my classroom is enriched with cultures from primarily Spanish speaking countries, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Puerto Rico & Ecuador. This school year I have 3 students ages ranging 12-16 that have never attend school before, according to their parents in their countries no schooling is available. Special education is ignored in many countries children are kept home, therefore a lot of support is needed for basic classroom etiquette and skills never taught. I have two students who can speak in a complete sentences. I have 6 students who are non-verbal and communicate using gestures and eye gazing. I have 4 students who respond using 1-2 words and have basic ASL (American Sign Language) skills. I have three groups for my students, sensory, sensory/pre-emergent and pre-emergent. These students do not read, struggle with comprehension, have no monetary or number sense and have little to no social skills.
