Having different seating options in my classroom will optimize learning because everyone learns best when their bodies are comfortable. Small children are not the exception. While some of my students like working at traditional tables with plastic chairs, many have taken to working on the floor with white boards as a table. Others prefer to stand while they work. As long as they are engaged, I don’t mind. When I do small group lessons, like writing conferences or math reteaching, we usually sit on the floor in a circle. It would be so much better if we had soft cushions to sit on. My library has 4 chairs I have collected from various family members and thrift stores, but there are usually more than 4 kids in the library during free choice time. It would be amazing if they could take a foldable chair and sit right in the library with their friends. Given their various abilities, they usually buddy read. Working with relaxed bodies will optimize their learning and make management much easier for me. Happy kids+happy teacher=optimal environment for learning.
