I have about 185 students. I teach mostly 7th graders. The average age is 12. We are in a low income, high crime, area and many of my students suffer from the direct and indirect consequences of this. My students are mostly Latino with a sprinkling of African-American students. I'd say at least 99% of them will be the first person in their family to go to college. On the plus side, my school does a good job of trying to get the parents involved in their children's educations. On the negative side, most of these parents are working two or three jobs at low wages. I want to give these students everything I can to help make up for the extreme disadvantages they are facing.
